The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has given the green light to a proposal to revoke the reservation of 3.591 hectares of land in Katraj, originally designated as a municipal playground, and reassign it for dairy production. The plot is slated to be handed over to Katraj Dairy, which operates from an adjacent area. The city improvement committee approved the resolution on December 20, 2023, as per Pune city's development plan. The next steps involve inviting suggestions and objections, followed by general body approval and final clearance from the state government's urban development department.
Katraj Dairy, managed by the Pune District Cooperative Milk Producer Sangh, is set to take charge of the land once the proposal completes the approval process. The move to alter the land reservation started after a faction of the NCP, acting as the deputy chief minister, requested the change in February 2021. The PMC commissioner submitted the proposal to the city improvement committee, and upon final approval, the land worth an estimated ₹100 crore could be handed over to Katraj Dairy, subject to compensation to the private landowners.
