PMC Phased Approach to Repair 40 Aging Bridges

08 Jan 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated repair work on the Yashwantrao Chavan Bridge, connecting Karve Road and Shivaji Road, as part of a comprehensive effort to address structural concerns in 40 ageing bridges across the city. The repair project, estimated at ₹35 crore, is being executed in phases, with an initial allocation of ₹15 crore for the first phase. Following a detailed structural audit, the PMC identified bridges requiring maintenance, including the replacement of bearings and sockets. The Yashwantrao Chavan Bridge, currently undergoing repair, necessitates the replacement of 95 bearings, a process expected to take eight days, while the overall refurbishment is slated for completion within a month.

The 40 bridges marked for repair include prominent structures like the Bund Garden bridge, Holkar old bridge, Aundh-Wakad bridge, and the Sadhu Vaswani Road over Bridge (ROB). The PMC's proactive approach aims to address structural risks and ensure the continued safety and functionality of key infrastructure in Pune. The ongoing repair work aligns with the city's commitment to periodic audits and maintenance, contributing to the longevity and reliability of crucial transportation links.
