The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been tasked with cleaning the city's nullahs and gutters before the impending monsoon season, with a deadline set for May 15. Progress reports from various areas indicate ongoing efforts, with significant headway made in locations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Nagar and Karve Nagar, where a substantial portion of the nullahs have been cleaned and priority spots addressed. However, concerns have been raised regarding the disposal of the extracted material, as citizens fear that if not properly managed, the debris could find its way back into the nullahs during rainfall, potentially undermining the cleaning efforts.
PMC officials emphasise the importance of addressing past issues to prevent incidents like the 2019 Ambil Odha overflow, focusing on tasks such as widening, deepening, and installing nets to prevent trash accumulation. Yet, civic activists like Vivek Velankar stress the need for a robust disposal mechanism to ensure sustained cleanliness and prevent the recontamination of nullahs post-cleaning. Residents similarly highlight the challenge of debris accumulation at the end of streams, signalling a need for comprehensive solutions to effectively maintain the cleanliness of Pune's drainage systems ahead of the monsoon season.
