In a coordinated effort to address environmental concerns and adhere to directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) conducted an anti-encroachment drive on DP Road between the Rajaram and Mhatre bridges. The civic administration demolished 15 illegal structures, covering 1.5 lakh sqft in the green belt, which primarily included marriage halls, lawns, and food joints. Notices were previously issued, and some establishments voluntarily removed illegal extensions, while the PMC took action against those that did not adhere to the directives. Additionally, around 6,000 cubic feet of sand, utilized for unauthorized reclamation near the riverbank, was removed during the operation.
As part of its ongoing commitment to environmental preservation, PMC filed an affidavit with NGT, affirming that no permissions were granted for temporary structures within the blue line area of the Mula-Mutha river. The NGT had directed PMC to issue notices for the removal of illegal encroachments, resulting in the recent anti-encroachment drive. A joint inspection with the irrigation department revealed 30 properties constructed within the river's blue line. The NGT's order mandated PMC to take corrective action and submit a compliance report by December 10, which the civic administration has committed to fulfilling.
