The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has requested the central government for a one-year extension to complete the River Rejuvenation Project, which is being implemented with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The project aims to collect and treat sewage before releasing it into the Mula-Mutha river, improving water quality for potential agricultural use. Originally set for completion by March 2025, the project has achieved only 70% progress, prompting the municipal commissioner to seek an extension until March 2026.
According to PMC data, Pune uses 1,750 MLD of water and generates 1,450 MLD of sewage daily. While the city currently operates nine sewage treatment plants (STPs), 11 new STPs are being constructed under this initiative. The ₹1,000 crore project, approved in 2016, faced delays before work began. Currently, 10 of the 11 new STPs are under construction, with work yet to start on the one near the Botanical Garden. Additionally, 50 km of drainage lines are being laid to support the sewage collection and treatment process.
