PMC Seeks Rs 2,000 Crore to Expedite Land Acquisition for Key Infrastructure Projects

16 Jan 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sought nearly Rs 2,000 crore from the state government to expedite land acquisition for around 20 key projects, as landowners insist on cash compensation instead of Transferable Development Rights (TDR) or Floor Space Index (FSI). Among these, the drainage system for merged areas requires the largest funding of Rs 1,200 crore. Other projects include road development in areas like Ganeshkhind, Warje, Shivane, and the creation of a botanical garden at Taljai. Civic officials have submitted project-specific proposals to secure funds through various avenues, including the state budget and central government schemes like the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).

Political leaders, including Congress, have urged the state government to allocate adequate funds to ensure timely completion of these infrastructure initiatives. Despite efforts to encourage landowners to accept TDR or FSI, officials report minimal success, citing complaints about the complexity of the process. Landowners remain firm on cash compensation, leading to situations where land acquisition costs exceed project costs, further complicating progress on these vital developments.
