Following the suspension of a junior engineer from the Road Department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), a private contractor now faces a penalty for engaging in unauthorised road excavation. The incident came to light during an inspection by an additional municipal commissioner near the Abhimanshree Society area on Pashan Road.
The municipal commissioner took swift action by suspending the junior engineer responsible for permitting digging on a recently resurfaced asphalted road in the Abhimanshree area. Subsequent internal inquiries by the Road Department revealed that the private contractor had excavated the road without obtaining prior approval. The PMC had granted permission to the contractor in September, setting a deadline for completion by October 31 under the 24x7 regular and equitable water supply schemes. However, the contractor proceeded with the excavation in December without informing the Road Department. In response to this violation, the PMC imposed a fine of ₹8.77 lakh for the unauthorised excavation of the newly resurfaced road. The executive engineer of the Road Department emphasised the importance of obtaining prior permission before any road excavation and issued a warning to the contractor.
