PMC Spends ₹1,500 Crore on Salaries Only ₹675 Crore on Infrastructure Projects

09 Dec 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), currently governed by an administrator, has faced criticism for its slow pace of development, with infrastructure projects worth only ₹675 crore undertaken in the first half of the financial year. According to the half-yearly performance report, the civic body collected ₹4,310 crore in revenue between April and September, with property tax contributing ₹1,507 crore and GST allowances adding ₹1,248 crore. However, PMC's major expenditure has been on staff salaries, amounting to ₹1,500 crore, leaving limited funds utilized for capital works, such as ₹175 crore for bridges and river improvement, ₹125 crore for water supply, and ₹88 crore for roads.

Municipal Commissioner, also the PMC administrator, attributed the delayed progress to the time lost during the enforcement of the election code for both Lok Sabha and state assembly polls. He emphasized the need for accelerated infrastructure work and directed civic departments to expedite projects. With the potential for civic body elections in the coming months, PMC is focusing on pushing proposed development initiatives to address the city's growing infrastructure demands.
