The announcement of the Lok Sabha election, the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) standing committee greenlit several projects totaling Rs 250 crore. The approvals encompassed a range of initiatives, including the construction of flyovers, grade-separators, hyacinth removal, road repairs, and pre-monsoon works such as nullah cleaning. Civic officials cited the urgency to initiate critical projects, especially those related to pre-monsoon preparations, before the imposition of the election code of conduct, which would prohibit the approval of new projects. However, civic activists have raised concerns about the rushed approvals, particularly noting the significantly lower rates for certain works, raising questions about the maintenance of work quality and the adherence to guidelines.
The committee's clearance also included laying pipelines, constructing culverts, and sanctioning works for a sports complex and swimming tanks. Despite the urgency expressed by PMC officials, activists from groups like Surajya Sangharsh Samiti have called for an inquiry into the hurried approvals, alleging potential mala fide intentions and urging accountability for officials involved.
