Amidst water scarcity concerns in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has taken action against 200 illegal water connections following complaints from citizens. Despite previous amnesty schemes introduced in 2018 and 2022 to address the issue, the PMC has struggled to curb unauthorised connections effectively. PMC officials detect and disconnect these illegal taps upon receiving reports of low water pressure, urging citizens to report any such instances.
However, the challenge persists, with an estimated 4.5 lakh illegal water taps across civic areas compared to around 5 lakh legal connections, both residential and commercial. Efforts like amnesty schemes have seen limited success, with only a fraction of illegal connections coming forward for regularisation, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement measures to combat water theft.
