PMC Takes Charge of Slum Rehabilitation on City-Owned Land

01 Nov 2023

In a bid to address the longstanding issue of slum rehabilitation delays in Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to take matters into its own hands by redeveloping slums located on its own land. Pune, home to 486 slums and accommodating 40 percent of the city's population, faces dire living conditions in these settlements, characterized by overcrowding, poor sanitation, and a lack of essential facilities. Despite being registered as a builder with the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) in 2004, PMC had not actively pursued SRA projects on its land until recently. Recognizing the pressing need for improved living conditions, PMC's initiative follows its successful construction of 2,918 houses through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Vadgaon, Hadapsar, and Kharadi. To drive this endeavor, a special officer for slum redevelopment, Sudhir Kadam, has been appointed, and close coordination between various municipal departments will be crucial to its success, emphasizing PMC's commitment to enhancing the lives of Pune's slum residents.

To expedite the initiative, a meeting involving Commissioner and key officials was held, and the Assistant Commissioner of the respective zonal office where a slum is situated will play a pivotal role in determining resident eligibility for this redevelopment scheme. PMC's decision to independently address slum rehabilitation on its land aims to provide improved living conditions and permanent housing for the city's slum residents, signaling a proactive approach to tackle this longstanding issue.
