On Monday (29 July), the civic administration deployed 25 JCB machines and earthmovers to clear illegal debris along various sections of the Mutha river banks between Rajaram bridge and Shivane. Citizens have accused commercial establishments along the river of dumping debris in the blue line and using the prohibited area for parking and food joints. This unscientific reclamation has reportedly reduced the river’s water-carrying capacity, leading to flash floods, particularly during recent heavy rains along Sinhagad Road. PMC officials are focusing on the Mhatre Bridge-Shivane stretch and considering criminal charges against repeat offenders. Activists have criticised civic officials for allegedly turning a blind eye to these encroachments, arguing that timely action could have prevented the problem from escalating.
The administration's efforts follow repeated directives from high courts and other legal authorities to remove encroachments. In 2017, after an NGT order, PMC conducted a special drive to clear unauthorised constructions in the Mutha river floodline, imposing heavy fines on violators. Further anti-encroachment drives were carried out in 2022 and 2023, resulting in the demolition of illegal structures spanning over 4 lakh sq ft and 1 lakh sq ft, respectively. In June this year, PMC also demolished structures in the green belt area. Despite these efforts, activists claim that many civic officials are complicit in the ongoing illegal activities.
