The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to provide a written response to queries regarding the Balbharati-Paud Phata Road project, which were raised by concerned residents before the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) formed by the Supreme Court. During a recent hearing, CEC members engaged with PMC's road department, forest department officials, and objecting citizens to discuss the contentious road project cutting through the city's hills. While PMC emphasised the necessity of the road to alleviate traffic congestion and minimise environmental impact, concerns were raised about the lack of a finalised traffic study report and procedural irregularities in project approval.
Allegations surfaced that PMC did not adhere to due process, as mandated by Bombay High Court orders, when developing the detailed project report without a comprehensive traffic assessment. Although PMC officials refrained from commenting on these claims, the CEC has directed the corporation to ensure transparency by making all project documents publicly available. Following an upcoming site inspection, the CEC will further evaluate the project's merits and address residents' objections, potentially convening another meeting to discuss findings and recommendations.
