PMC to Install Fogging System at Hadapsar Waste Depot After Resident Protests Over Pollution

08 Apr 2025

In response to rising public complaints and a protest in November 2024 over dust pollution and foul odour from the Hadapsar solid waste transfer station, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced plans to install a fogging/misting system across the 30-acre facility. The system will spray fine, environmentally-safe mist every 15 minutes round-the-clock to suppress dust and neutralise odours. The move comes after sustained pressure from residents of Sopan Baug, Uday Baug, Ghorpadi, BT Kawade Road, and nearby areas, who cited severe health impacts due to the foul smell and air pollution. The PMC’s solid waste department has floated a tender for experienced contractors to install and maintain the system for five years, along with additional infrastructure like anti-smog guns and a tyre washing bay to prevent road contamination.

The Hadapsar station is PMC’s largest solid waste transfer site, handling high daily volumes and located near three major waste facilities, including a wet waste compost plant, a mixed waste processing unit, and a sanitary landfill. PMC officials noted that foul odour is also exacerbated by an ongoing bio-mining project by the Pune Cantonment Board in the vicinity. To address the issue comprehensively, the PMC plans to ensure year-round operation of the fogging system and will require shortlisted bidders to demonstrate the system’s effectiveness before approval. This initiative marks a shift from earlier proposals like covering the depot with a shed, which had been opposed by residents fearing worsened conditions.
