The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported record income from building permissions and property taxes in the 2023–24 financial year, totaling around Rs 7,500 crore in revenue. However, this falls short of the targeted revenue of approximately Rs 9,500 crore, raising concerns about budget inflation. Despite this being the fifth consecutive year of revenue shortfall, the PMC has presented a budget exceeding Rs 11,000 crore for the 2024–25 fiscal year, relying heavily on financial aid from state and union governments.
Critics, including activists and experts, attribute the budget inflation to populist measures, alleging that the absence of elected members provided an opportunity for a more realistic budget. They advocate for budgets aligned with previous revenue collections to avoid unrealistic figures and ensure a focus on essential civic projects, highlighting the need for increased transparency and accountability in financial planning by the PMC.
