PMC Undertakes Stormwater Infrastructure Overhaul to Combat Water Logging Issues in Pune

31 Mar 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has commenced the laying of stormwater lines and repair work on stormwater and drainage chambers along the Karve Road stretch, extending from Garware High School towards Nal Stop. These ongoing works aim to alleviate water logging issues, particularly near Garware High School, by connecting newly laid pipes to the main drainage line near Garware High School Chowk. Despite the progress, regular commuters have expressed concerns regarding the reinstatement of road and footpaths post-construction. Residents recall similar works conducted on Prabhat Road last year, urging the administration to ensure proper resurfacing and fixing of tiles to avoid haphazard completion.

In addition to Karve Road, the PMC has also laid stormwater lines in the Deccan Gymkhana area as part of flood mitigation measures. While a significant portion of the proposed work has been completed, pending tasks at Pulachi Wadi on the riverbed are expected to conclude within the next few weeks. With a focus on enhancing the stormwater drain network, constructing box drains, and widening and deepening nullahs at various locations across the city, the PMC plans to utilise Rs 147 crore allocated by the Centre under the urban flood risk management programme, contributing to a total outlay of Rs 286 crore for flood mitigation efforts in Pune.
