PMC’s Demolition Drive in Karve Nagar to Ease Traffic Woes and Expedite Road Widening

24 Jan 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Thursday conducted a demolition drive in Karve Nagar, razing a compound wall of the Maharshi Karve Stree Shikshan Samstha institute and nearby shops to facilitate the widening of Panand Road. The stretch, which connects Siddhivinayak College to Cummins College, has long faced severe traffic congestion, particularly during morning and evening rush hours. PMC officials stated that the road widening will significantly ease traffic woes and benefit the large number of students and commuters who use this route daily. Residents also highlighted that the DP road in Karve Nagar has become a hotspot for food joints, wedding lawns, and cultural events, further contributing to traffic jams.

While experts suggest options like dedicated lanes for specific vehicles or one-way conversions to manage congestion, PMC officials believe road widening alone will resolve most issues. Residents emphasized the need to address unauthorized structures and roadside vendors by creating designated hawker zones to prevent further obstructions. Commuters traveling between key areas like Sinhagad Road and Kothrud have expressed relief that long-discussed plans for widening the road are finally seeing progress.
