PMC’s First Rental Housing Project Stuck in Planning Stage

28 Mar 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation’s first rental housing project, announced a year ago, has yet to gain momentum. Planned to address affordable housing needs and accommodate the city’s growing floating population, the project was introduced in the 2024-25 budget, with Baner as its initial location. However, PMC officials confirm that groundwork has not begun, as the administration is still assessing the demand and feasibility of rental housing. The civic body is also considering offering some homes under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) on a rental basis as a trial. A detailed project report (DPR) is being prepared, and tenders for the report are in process, with actual project work set to commence only after its approval.

Meanwhile, PMC has launched the second phase of PMAY, aiming to build 4,173 affordable homes in Balewadi, Kondhwa, Dhanori, and Wadgaon Khurd, raising the income eligibility limit to ₹6 lakh annually. The proposed rental housing facility under PMAY may also benefit students, who often struggle to find accommodation due to housing society restrictions. Urban planners emphasize that rental housing projects are essential for Pune’s rapidly expanding workforce, highlighting the urgent need for affordable rental spaces as more people migrate to the city for employment opportunities.
