The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has granted building approvals for over 200 projects in areas beyond a 5 km radius of the Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal limits, where alternative water sources have been identified. This move follows both the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) notification of their inability to supply water to these outlying areas due to resource limitations. Developers committed to sourcing water from agencies like the Pune Zilla Parishad and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran, and the PMRDA rigorously scrutinized water source documentation before approving the projects.
PMC and PCMC officials stated that existing water resources are already stretched thin, impacting supply even within municipal limits. PMC indicated it currently requires 24 TMC of water to meet Pune’s needs, which will rise to 26 TMC by 2037; however, only 16.36 TMC has been sanctioned until 2032. PCMC echoed similar concerns, citing its population growth to 3.5 million and challenges in providing adequate water. As per a recent circular, municipalities are responsible for supplying water within a 5 km radius of their boundaries, yet given the scarcity, both PMC and PCMC emphasized the need for PMRDA to develop local water solutions to address these challenges effectively.
