The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has cancelled its previous order mandating developers of new projects in 23 merged villages and areas outside a 5km radius of civic limits to submit affidavits ensuring water supply. The new decision has caused concern among citizens, who fear it will worsen water shortages in the metropolitan region. The PMRDA commissioner stated that it is now the responsibility of civic bodies, such as PMC and PCMC, to provide water to these areas as per Urban Development Department guidelines. However, citizens and NGOs argue that the cancellation of the water affidavits will lead to unchecked development without adequate infrastructure, exacerbating the region’s water crisis.
A senior PMRDA official explained that the decision was made due to developers submitting false affidavits. The responsibility for water supply in the 23 merged villages and the areas within 5km of civic limits now lies with local authorities. While the new circular aims to streamline the process for developers in 242 villages, citizens and activists are planning legal action, questioning the move’s impact on already strained water resources and demanding better urban planning and infrastructure.
