The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (PMRDA) Metro Line 3 is now expected to commence operations by the end of this year, as the concessionaire has sought an extension until September for project execution. With 83-85% of the work completed, officials anticipate that construction will be finished by September, followed by trial runs in October or November. The crucial integrated flyover at University Chowk is targeted for completion by April, but delays in land acquisition and utility shifting remain key obstacles. While the request for a timeline extension is still under consideration, officials confirm that an earlier completion is unlikely. The earlier target for the third Metro line was March 2025.
The 23-km Metro corridor, featuring 23 stations, has seen substantial progress, with 12 stations currently under construction. The integrated flyover between University Chowk and E-square junction remains a critical component, as ramps and deck slabs are still being built. Officials stress that Metro operations cannot commence without its completion. Despite multiple reviews by the deputy CM, heavy traffic along the route has slowed down the pace of construction. Developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model, the Metro Line 3 project has a total estimated cost of ₹8,313 crore. Trial runs will last two to two-and-a-half months, after which final approvals will be sought before opening the Metro to the public.
