Prominent Construction Firm in Pune Penalised ₹1 Lakh for Air Pollution Violation

04 Dec 2023

A prominent construction company in Pune faced a fine of ₹1 lakh from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) after residents in Shewalwadi and Manjari complained about the company's failure to remove construction and demolition waste from its site. Local inhabitants raised concerns about the dust and pollution emanating from ongoing construction projects, leading civic officials to visit the site and take action in accordance with state government directives. The construction activities, particularly in large-scale housing projects, were reported to be flouting regulations, causing air and noise pollution, and disturbing the daily lives of residents. Following the complaint, PMC officials fined the construction company for violating solid waste rules and issued a show cause notice, intending to take further action based on the company's response.

Residents in Shewalwadi and Manjari areas had submitted written complaints to various authorities, including the district collector and PMC commissioner, urging action against the construction company. The concerns raised included increased air pollution, dust accumulation on roads, and disturbances caused by construction activities extending late into the night. PMC officials, upon inspection, found construction and demolition waste left on the site, leading to the imposition of the fine. The civic body reiterated its commitment to enforcing guidelines, such as the use of water sprinkling and green nets at construction sites, to mitigate environmental impact and protect the well-being of local communities.
