The Maharashtra property registration department, in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), is working to mask fingerprints and Aadhaar numbers on property documents registered before July 2023 to prevent Aadhaar-linked frauds. This initiative follows advice from the UIDAI after complaints of fraudsters accessing sensitive information. While the NIC has developed AI Nibhrit software to mask this data, it currently works only with PDF files, and older records stored in TIFF format present a technical challenge that the NIC is working to resolve.
Masking of new documents began in October 2023, covering sale deeds and rental agreements, and around 40 lakh documents registered post-July have already been masked. The initiative will soon extend to older documents once the technical issues are addressed. Officials and cyber experts believe that masking will reduce the risk of personal data theft, enhancing privacy protection for individuals. The masked documents will be available for download, with proper checks in place to ensure only secure data is accessible.
