Property Tax Collection Challenges Persist as Pune Civic Body Faces Rs 8,500 Crore Dues

22 Aug 2023

Despite various efforts by the administration to recover property tax dues, the total owed to the civic body has escalated to Rs 8,500 crore. A significant 41% of property owners missed the August 2 deadline for payment this year, resulting in the loss of discounts and benefits for prompt payment. Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) had undertaken measures such as sealing properties and auctioning them to retrieve the dues; however, out of the approximately 12 lakh property owners liable for payment, around 5 lakh have not yet paid. While both residential and commercial property owners are among the defaulters, civic activists argue that a more stringent approach is required to address this issue.

Despite the Pune Municipal Corporation's introduction of multiple amnesty schemes for tax defaulters, the total outstanding property tax has surged to Rs 8,500 crore, raising concerns over effective recovery strategies. A considerable 41% of property owners missed this year's August 2 deadline, exacerbating the problem. PMC's efforts, including property sealing and auctions, have yielded limited success, with around 5 lahks out of 12 lakh liable property owners failing to pay. Civic activists suggest that stringent action is imperative, highlighting the need for a shift from amnesty relief to robust recovery methods.
