Responding to a recent surge in mosquito activity along the Mula-Mutha stretch encompassing Keshavnagar, Kharadi, and Mundhwa areas of Pune, the civic administration has initiated the use of drones to spray insecticide. This measure follows the circulation of a viral video depicting swarms of mosquitoes forming tornado-like formations over the water body earlier this month. Notably, this marks the second instance of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) employing drones for insecticide spraying, having previously utilised them at Katraj lake last year. Additionally, PMC officials have been actively removing water hyacinth from the river to curb mosquito breeding, with the current pesticide being described as natural and harmless to local flora and fauna.
In response to the heightened mosquito activity, residents have reported significant discomfort, with some unable to remain outdoors for even brief periods. This situation has prompted local housing societies to issue guidelines, particularly advising children to limit outdoor activities during evening hours. The PMC has recorded 137 suspected dengue cases and five confirmed cases within the city limits this year, along with five cases of chikungunya. These developments underscore the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate the mosquito menace and safeguard public health in affected areas.
