The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has earmarked Rs 3.5 crore for the removal of water hyacinth infestations in the Mula and Mutha rivers, along with Katraj, Pashan, and Jambhulwadi lakes. The post-monsoon growth of hyacinth has led to a mosquito menace in these water bodies. While the mechanised method will be employed for hyacinth removal, citizens and activists are urging the administration to address the issue with a more sustainable, long-term solution to prevent hyacinth recurrence.
Residents near Katraj and Jambhulwadi lakes have been grappling with mosquito problems and accumulating garbage due to hyacinth. Some residents highlight that the Mutha river has been plagued by hyacinth for years, with the situation showing no signs of improvement despite annual spending on removal efforts. Last year, the PMC's attempt to clear Katraj lake's hyacinth using drones and pesticides did not yield satisfactory results. Residents emphasise the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle untreated water release and ensure a lasting resolution to the hyacinth issue. The PMC has initiated the tendering process to engage agencies for hyacinth removal, emphasising the urgency of the task. Ongoing efforts at locations like Holkar bridge and the Mutha river aim to address the issue promptly, with last year's appointed agencies instructed to resume hyacinth-clearing activities.
