The city of Pune is finally taking action against civic engineers responsible for the deplorable condition of roads. Show-cause notices have been issued to four officials whose areas had severely damaged roads filled with potholes. The additional commissioner of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed these officials to immediately commence road repairs of high-quality. Failure to comply will lead to strict disciplinary action, including fines, suspensions, or blocked promotions. While civic activists welcome this step, they assert that senior officials should also be held accountable to ensure a more effective deterrent.
Last year, PMC faced criticism for poorly maintained roads during the monsoon, leading to fines for contractors and officials responsible for substandard work. This year, surveys at various locations revealed numerous stretches with potholes, resulting in notices being served to junior engineers at those sites. A helpline and WhatsApp option have been introduced to report damaged roads, but road users remain concerned about risky driving conditions and question PMC's decision to allow road digging, anticipating potential inconvenience to commuters. Citizens demand a permanent solution to the recurring pothole problem and express suspicions of collusion between civic officials and contractors. PMC justifies road digging for significant projects like 24X7 water supply to avoid cost escalation.
