In January 2024, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) reported 687 power outages in the Pune circle alone, affecting approximately 2.2 million consumers for a total duration exceeding 1,496 hours. The Pune circle encompasses Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and rural areas in Pune district, with specific divisions like Ganeshkhind circle covering industrial zones such as Bhosari and Kothrud. Rasta Peth, covering most parts of Pune city, experienced 227 power failures, leaving over 7,86,017 consumers without electricity for approximately 533.08 minutes. However, MSEDCL faced criticism for not adhering to the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) rules by not publishing reliability index data on its website for three months following January 2024.
Despite the staggering number of power interruptions, MSEDCL officials assured prompt publication of reliability index data, typically uploaded quarterly. The data revealed that rural Pune witnessed the most significant impact, enduring 296 power outages, leaving around 1,71,721 consumers in darkness for nearly 593.75 minutes. Civic activist Vivek Velankar expressed concerns about MSEDCL's responsiveness, alleging that the company only discloses information after complaints are lodged, highlighting systemic issues that often go unaddressed. Meanwhile, across Maharashtra, January 2024 saw 13,001 power outages, impacting around 50 million consumers, with a collective blackout duration exceeding 23,434 hours.
