Pune Municipal Corporation to Address Water Woes in Merged Villages with Tanker Supply Initiative

22 Sep 2023

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is taking steps to address the pressing issue of inadequate water supply in merged villages that lack a proper water line network. Residents of areas like Kolewadi, Jambhulwadi, Bhilarewadi, Ambegaon, Yewalewadi, and others, which were incorporated into PMC limits over time, have long been struggling without access to a reliable water source. Due to persistent protests and demands for basic amenities from the residents, PMC has decided to provide drinking water through tankers. PMC recently published tenders and invited tanker operators to supply water to these areas. Additionally, PMC plans to install plastic tanks in some locations, which will be regularly filled with water from tankers, aiming to alleviate the water scarcity issue. This initiative comes as a relief to many housing societies in these merged villages that have been forced to pay substantial amounts for water tankers due to irregular water supply.

The head of the PMC water department emphasized the importance of this endeavor, noting that while the gram panchayats had previously used water tanks to supply water to locals, PMC now intends to ensure a more consistent and adequate water supply through tankers. With an estimated cost of ₹10 lakh, PMC intends to install 25 such tanks, improving access to drinking water for the residents of these merged villages who have long been grappling with this essential issue.
