The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has successfully completed the survey for the construction of a 28-km-long tunnel from Khadakwasla Dam to Phursungi, with an estimated project cost of ₹2,200 crore. The proposed tunnel aims to replace the existing open canal responsible for transporting water to the city. According to officials, this initiative is expected to save 2.5 TMC (thousand cubic metre feet) of water annually. Following the survey, the PMC is exploring potential commercial or town planning schemes for the available land along the canal route.
The decision to build the tunnel comes as a response to concerns about water contamination and leakage in the existing open canal. The identified land, ranging between 500 metres and 1000 metres in width, spans various areas, including parts falling under the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) and the majority within the PMC jurisdiction. The irrigation department, along with the state-level technical committee's approval, anticipates the completion of the project within three years.
