The onset of an early summer, coupled with poor water supply and the expansion of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) area, has led to a surge in demand for drinking water tankers in the city. Data from the PMC water department indicates a notable increase, with daily tanker trips rising by 20% to 1,200 in March 2024 compared to the same period in the past two years. This trend is expected to continue, with projections suggesting the number of trips may surpass 1,400 by the end of April.
The demand for tanker water is particularly high in newly merged areas and those where infrastructure development is still underway, such as Sus, Mahalunge, Undri, and Uruli Devachi. In response, the PMC has ramped up tanker trips to these regions, increasing from 525 per day in 2022 to 748 daily in 2024. However, challenges persist, with certain locations facing irregular water supply schedules and residents resorting to alternative measures, including queuing up at taps and advocating for improved water management.
