Once reverberating with slogans and black banners, the village square in Pargaon Memane has nearly shed its reputation as a hub of anti-airport protests. Yet, with assembly elections just 12 days away, farmers remain unwavering, resolute in defending their land against proposed acquisition for an international airport project in Purandar taluka. Former sarpanch Jitendra Memane, echoing the community’s resolve, cited the Supreme Court's recent ruling that arbitrary state land acquisition without due procedure violates constitutional rights. While the airport remains the central issue among locals, political candidates avoid it on the campaign trail, mindful of the potential backlash.
Despite some softened stances from candidates, such as the former Shiv Sena representative who once supported the airport and faced electoral defeat, residents are vigilant. For villages like Khanawadi, Munjawadi, Ekhatpur, and Vanpuri, the stakes are high: many farmers could lose homes and fields. Residents, instead, are advocating for better irrigation and electricity for their fields, cultivating crops like marigold, figs, and jowar. Villagers assert that only candidates addressing local needs will gain support, while rallies and large gatherings are expected to be sparse, as politicians avoid directly confronting the airport issue in these stronghold communities.
