The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing criticism from civic activists and residents for its proposal to construct a flyover and grade separator at Shastri Nagar chowk on Nagar Road. Critics argue that the proposed solution won't effectively address the overall traffic issues, and there are concerns about obtaining clearance due to the proximity to the Aga Khan Palace. The National Monument Authority rejected a Metro project on the same stretch in 2018, emphasising the prohibition of construction within 100 metres of a nationally protected monument. The PMC's flyover proposal has been referred to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), but residents and activists stress the need for traffic management and signal system improvements instead of a new flyover.
On the other hand, PMC officials defend the proposal, assuring that the flyover will maintain a safe distance of 100 metres from the monument, and its height will not exceed eight metres. They believe the project will receive clearance, citing initial checks and a commitment to incorporating necessary changes based on feedback. The administration argues that the flyover is essential to alleviate traffic congestion at Shastri Nagar chowk. As the debate continues, commuters and activists emphasise the importance of effective traffic management measures to ease congestion on the already wide stretch around the chowk.
