Residents Demand Better Bridge Lighting as River Levels Surge

04 Aug 2024

Amid rising water levels in city rivers due to persistent rainfall and dam discharge, citizens have urged the civic administration to ensure proper lighting on bridges and riverside roads to prevent mishaps. A resident who travelled via Deccan Gymkhana on Wednesday night noted non-functional street lights on Gadgil Bridge (Z-bridge) and SM Joshi Bridge, as well as at Pulachi Wadi and Baba Bhide Bridge. This lack of lighting could lead to accidents, especially during water releases from dams, he warned. Similarly, a bank employee reported non-functional street lights around Sangam Bridge and many other stretches in the city. The irrigation department continues to discharge 13,000 cusecs from Khadakwasla dam into the Mutha river, prompting the closure of low-lying bridges and roads as a precaution. Shaniwar Peth residents highlighted the risk posed by people using the riverside road despite overflowing waters and suggested setting up watchtowers at vulnerable spots.

PMC officials assured that they would address the lighting issues and identify areas needing additional lighting, especially where footfall is high. In related news, the PMC removed 40 illegally constructed sheds along the Mutha river in the Pulachi Wadi area on Thursday. The residents, who had returned to the sheds after water levels receded, were relocated to safer areas. The collective stock in the four dams in the Khadakwasla circle reached 26.2 TMC on Thursday evening, further necessitating these precautionary measures.
