Residents Demand ₹1,000 Crore for Merged Areas Will PMC Deliver?

03 Mar 2025

Residents of Pune's merged areas have demanded a special allocation of ₹1,000 crore in the upcoming civic budget to address critical infrastructure gaps such as garbage processing, water supply, and road development. Despite years passing since the merger, residents claim they still lack basic amenities, including proper drinking water and road connectivity. The Haveli Taluka citizens’ group has formally requested funds from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to resolve these longstanding issues. The PMC expanded significantly by incorporating multiple villages between 2017 and 2021, making it the largest municipal corporation in the state. However, in September 2024, Uruli-Phursungi was demerged, forming its own municipal council after repeated appeals from residents.

PMC officials have acknowledged the concerns and hinted that provisions for merged areas may be included in the upcoming budget, which is set to be presented on March 4. In the past, the civic administration had earmarked dedicated funds for these regions, though residents argue that improvements have been slow. With the previous budget for FY 2024-25 standing at ₹11,601 crore, PMC is reportedly relying on financial aid of ₹2,000 crore from state and central governments. Locals emphasize that despite paying higher property taxes than before, they have seen little improvement in civic infrastructure, making a dedicated budget allocation crucial for their development.
