Residents of Baner, Balewadi, Wakad, and Kaspate Vasti in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have turned to the Bombay High Court, filing a public interest litigation (PIL) to compel the opening of a newly-built bridge over the Mula River. The bridge, which was approved by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in 2013, was completed in the 2018-19 fiscal year, with an estimated cost exceeding ₹31 crore. However, it remains closed to the public, forcing residents to take a long and inconvenient route via the busy Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway to access the two cities. Despite repeated attempts to engage with authorities, including residents have received no positive response. The PIL seeks a court directive to open the Wakad-Balewadi Bridge, highlighting the inconvenience and challenges faced by thousands of residents in their daily commute and the misuse of the bridge's vicinity for unlawful activities, including garbage dumping and unauthorized parking.
The lethargic approach of the PMC and PCMC in addressing the bridge's delayed opening has spurred local residents into action. Their PIL aims to address the pressing need for a convenient transportation link between these neighborhoods, bridging the gap that the Mula River has imposed for far too long. With the completion of the bridge, the community hopes for a resolution to their daily commute woes and a safer, more orderly environment around the bridge area. The Bombay High Court's involvement may provide the impetus needed to ensure that the newly-built bridge finally serves its intended purpose and eases the lives of those it was designed to benefit.
