The construction of the new Sadhu Vaswani bridge in Koregaon Park, which began in July and is expected to take at least two years, has hit a roadblock due to pending clearance from the Railways. For two months, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been waiting for permission to demolish the portion of the existing bridge over train tracks, as this requires pausing train traffic. While Railways officials claim all permissions were given months ago, PMC states they have yet to receive a timetable for the required train stoppage. Despite this, PMC has continued work on the new bridge’s foundations and demolished other parts of the old bridge, leaving only the section over the tracks pending.
Meanwhile, large-scale traffic diversions in Koregaon Park, Mangaldas Road, and Circuit House areas due to the construction have caused severe congestion and longer commute times for residents. Key routes such as Bund Garden Road and Inspection Bungalow Chowk remain heavily affected, prompting residents to hold meetings with traffic authorities, though no significant relief has been achieved. Commuters and locals are urging PMC to adhere to the project timeline to minimize further inconvenience, as the new four-lane bridge promises to double vehicle capacity and ease traffic once completed.
