The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) concessionaire has conditionally agreed to accelerate the construction of the double-deck flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) Chowk, moving the completion deadline from November 2024 to August 2024. This decision was made due to concerns about commuter inconvenience on the busy arterial road, and it comes with the condition that all barricading permissions for the road stretch are obtained by September 15, and an escalated cost to expedite the work is being evaluated. The double-deck flyover is a crucial component of the 23-kilometer third metro line connecting Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, which is expected to become operational in April 2025. Currently, progress stands at approximately 22% for the SPPU flyover and 44% for the third metro line, with efforts to widen the road and obtain necessary permissions for the construction work ongoing.
The decision to speed up construction was prompted by the deputy chief minister during a recent online review meeting, where the government expressed its willingness to assist with permissions. Barricading permissions for the ramp construction at Ganeshkhind have already been granted, and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is actively working on widening the road from SPPU Chowk to RBI junction to ensure smoother traffic flow during construction. This involves expanding the current road width of 3-6 meters to 42-45 meters, and efforts are underway to acquire the necessary land. However, to maintain this accelerated schedule, the remaining barricading permissions for the entire stretch need to be cleared by mid-September, and the proposal must gain approval from the state government. MLA, initially proposed this expedited construction to the Chief Minister, and the ongoing work has faced criticism from citizens, who are eagerly awaiting its completion.
