State revenue officials have clarified that stamp papers of Rs 100 and Rs 200 denominations will continue to be available, addressing confusion among citizens after a cabinet decision to revise stamp duty rates for certain documents. The revision affects only 11 out of 64 document types, with the new Rs 500 stamp duty rate applying to specific documents like letters of licence, appraisals, divorce documents, and lease surrenders. However, Rs 100 and Rs 200 stamp papers will still be available for notary or private work, such as affidavits.
The revision of rates, in effect since 2004, was necessary to keep up with inflation, according to officials. Despite this, some organisations, including the Association of Real Estate Agents in Pune, have expressed concerns, arguing that the increase in charges for commonly used documents is unnecessary and burdens the public. They have urged the government to reconsider the decision, as they believe the revised rates could increase state revenue by Rs 1,000 crore annually.
