State Proposes Modernization of 100 Sub-Registrar Offices to Improve Citizen Services

16 Dec 2024

The state registration department’s proposal to modernize 100 sub-registrar offices is awaiting approval from the new revenue minister. This initiative, part of the department’s second phase of infrastructure upgrades, aims to address citizen complaints about cramped spaces and inadequate facilities. Following the successful renovation of several offices in the first phase earlier this year, the proposed plan includes new furniture, fixtures, and interior improvements to enhance the working environment for staff and visitors. The project, involving an allocation of Rs 10 crore, was issued through a government resolution (GR) before the state assembly elections on October 14 but now requires re-approval.

Activists and citizens have raised concerns over the poor conditions of many sub-registrar offices, with long queues and insufficient seating arrangements being common issues. Activists emphasized the need for not just renovations but also the establishment of new offices to handle the growing demand. They highlighted the dire situation in the city’s three main registration offices, which face constant overcrowding and urgently require attention to improve services for citizens.
