Commuters in Maharashtra have voiced concerns over the increasing vehicular traffic on highways such as the Pune-Mumbai expressway and the Pune-Bengaluru highway during the financial year 2023-24 compared to the previous year. Data from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) and the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) revealed a notable uptick in traffic flow, with the total vehicular traffic on the expressway reaching 4,76,65,078 in 2023-24 compared to 4,50,54,371 in 2022-23. Similarly, the monthly vehicular flow in the last fiscal year stood at 39,72,089, with daily traffic averaging around 1.3 lakh vehicles, up from 37,54,530 vehicles and 1.23 lakh daily traffic in 2022-23. These figures underscore the growing demand for enhanced policing and traffic management measures to address the challenges posed by the surge in vehicular traffic.
Despite claims of decreased accidents, frequent commuters remain apprehensive about the safety implications of the rising traffic volume, emphasising the need for effective measures to ensure road safety. In response to these concerns, authorities have highlighted the upcoming implementation of an intelligent traffic management system (ITMS) on the highways to address issues such as speeding and lane cutting. While the ITMS is expected to enhance traffic discipline, activists emphasise the importance of physical presence and enforcement by authorities to deter traffic violations effectively. Commuters stress the need for proactive measures by police and transport department officials to prevent traffic congestion and ensure safer travel experiences on these busy highways.
