In a strategic decision aimed at optimising resources and avoiding public criticism, the municipal authorities have opted not to demolish the Vishrantwadi Chowk foot-overbridge (FOB) for the proposed flyover and grade separator project. Instead, for the first time, the FOB will be dismantled and repurposed at two different locations within the city. The move comes after scrutiny and deliberation between the municipal officials and the contractors involved in the project, addressing concerns regarding poor planning and cost-efficiency, which have previously led to backlash from citizens and civic activists.
The Vishrantwadi Chowk, a chaotic intersection witnessing traffic from eight directions, has long been plagued by congestion and safety issues. The decision to reuse the FOB at alternative locations on Alandi Road and in the Shivajinagar area aligns with the municipality's aim to alleviate traffic woes and enhance urban infrastructure while making sustainable use of existing resources. The FOB, originally constructed without proper planning and public outreach, will now find a new purpose in the city's transportation network, contributing to the ongoing urban development initiatives.
