After months of persistent efforts and vocal protests by the people staying in Punawale, the proposed Garbage Depot plan in Punawale has been officially canceled by the state government. The community, with the support of SaudaGhar, showcased the power of peaceful protests, and approximately 1 lakh residents of Punawale emerged victorious.
This decision marks the end of a 15-year-old proposal that had been a point of contention. The people of Punawale, backed by SaudaGhar continuous advocacy, engaged in silent protests and various forms of expression to convey their opposition. The impactful and non-violent campaign led to the state government's announcement to scrap the plan during the winter session of the Assembly.
Notably, Punawale, part of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) since 1998, had faced the prospect of a Solid Waste Management Plant, proposed in 2008. The cancellation comes as a relief for the community, and PCMC will now explore alternative locations within Pune City for the waste management project.
